Dear Claremont Community,

I want to give you an update on what happened today (Nov. 10) at our school.

We had a student-led walkout during second period, right at 9:30. Students walked through the Miles Avenue gate, around College Avenue, up Chabot Road, down Presley, and then they returned through the Miles gate. The majority of the student body participated in the walkout. One group of 30 students continued walking past the Miles gate, crossed the street and went over to College Avenue and sat down for about 20 additional minutes.

At all times we had teachers and adults supervising the students as they walked around the block. No one was hurt. No one marched in the street. Most students returned to class for third period, but a handful decided not to go to class. We called their families and are having them go home for the day.

We support students’ right to express themselves. and have been encouraging classroom conversations around the election. We also encourage students to take this energy and momentum and continue their political activism, and connect with friends on how they can get involved and continue to make a difference.

If you have any questions, please contact the school office.

Respectfully,

Jonathan Mayer
Principal, Claremont Middle School
