Dear Claremont students and parents/guardians,

Thank you for making Claremont Middle School your school of choice. It is with great honor that I introduce myself as the new principal of Claremont Middle School. I am extremely excited about returning back to Claremont, where I had the privilege of working for 5 years, serving as an English teacher, 7th Grade Dean, Student Council/Oratorical Advisor, and basketball coach. The 2021-2022 school year will mark my 27th year in education with OUSD. During my journey, I have worked at the elementary and middle school levels in various capacities, including instructional assistant, academic liaison, classroom teacher, and administrator.

I look forward to collaborating with our community of parents, students, and teachers who will work to build positive relationships that support our vision of academic rigor and social growth, establishing and maintaining a positive school culture, hiring and retaining highly qualified teachers, and increasing family engagement. My goal is to continue to increase the outstanding educational programs and practices that led to Claremont Middle School being recognized as a California Distinguished School.

When our OUSD school campuses closed on March 13, 2020, no one could have ever anticipated being away from the Claremont campus for over a year. The Covid-19 pandemic has been challenging to our sense of normalcy around schooling and our daily living. I am proud of how our school community, staff, and students transitioned to distance learning to continue our academic programs. As we transition into the new school year, it is important for you to be in communication with our staff to ensure that we are serving our students effectively. Please take time to closely read the following important dates and information in this letter.

Start of School
The first official day of school for the 2021-22 academic school year is Monday, August 9th. In-person instruction begins at 8:30 am every day. You can view our Bell Schedule by clicking this link or visit the About Claremont – Daily Schedule tab on our website. Families choosing to opt for a virtual learning option should notify the Student Welcome Center immediately. Please note that by choosing the virtual option, students will lose their placement at Claremont. We will have minimum days during the first week of school, ending at 1:15 pm. The purpose of having minimum days during the first week of school is to increase the communication between home and school in support of all the students, which we hope to sustain throughout the school year. It is an opportunity for students and parents to voice their goals, strengths, and concerns, which will help to provide our teachers, administrators, and support staff with more insight on how to best support our students. It is also a great opportunity to share our school vision and mission of culture and climate, health and wellness, academic rigor, pre-referral supports, as well as share all the activities and clubs that Claremont offers to our students to increase student engagement and leadership.

Registration = Back To School Forms/ Data Confirmation

The MANDATORY back-to-school forms for this school year are to be completed online via the Parent Portal of Aeries, http://parent.ousd.org/. You should also be receiving notifications from the central office via ParentSquare regarding accessing the parent portal to complete the Back to School Forms. If you need support accessing the parent portal account, or need to schedule an in-person registration, please contact marta.gonzalez@ousd.org, our school Admin Assistant or edana.anderson@ousd.org, our Community Schools Manager. There will be site-specific forms for you to complete on our Claremont Website, or available during the first week of school. Make sure you complete the data confirmation process to guarantee your child’s spot at Claremont. Due to an extensive waiting list of students trying to get into Claremont, students who are not registered may be dropped from our enrollment. Please contact Marta Gonzalez by email if you will not be returning to Claremont, or would like the virtual option. If you are holding a spot at Claremont and a non-OUSD school, please make a decision asap to allow families on the waitlist an opportunity to get in.

Schedule and Program

The normal master schedule consists of 3 Marking Periods for Fall Semester and 3 Marking Periods for Spring Semester. A typical Claremont schedule for in-person instruction consists of the following classes per marking period: English, Math, History, Science, PE, an Elective class, an Enrichment/Intervention/ELD class, and Advisory. Our team will be working hard to update student schedules in the next two weeks. We will send out information as we get closer to August 9th as to how you will be able to access your child’s schedule. This year we are excited to have a 90-minute block schedule. Having a block schedule will provide students with more time for in-depth learning and will help increase student engagement by providing multiple opportunities for students to collaborate and reflect. It will also allow for more Social Emotional Learning (SEL) instruction and community building.

Communication

Please make sure you regularly update your contact information, telephone numbers, home address, and email address by contacting the school front office staff. The Aeries contact information is used to communicate with you using ParentSquare, Robocall messaging, email, and/or weekly Claremont Knightline newsletter. We also update information on our website: www.claremontms.org and the marquee on the corner of Miles and College Ave. Please sign up for ParentSquare here, if you have not already done so. Download the ParentSquare app for your Android phone through Google Play or for your iPhone in the Apple App Store.

Rules, Expectations, and Healthy & Safety Protocol

Our staff will review our school rules and expectations with students when school is back in session. Please help your child prepare to learn by ensuring they respectfully and actively participate in their learning every day. This includes ensuring that they follow all COVID health safety practices while on campus, such as properly wearing a face mask, eating a healthy breakfast, practice effective time management, and have all appropriate supplies. While the OUSD COVID health and safety guidelines could be updated and changed during the year when school begins students will no longer be required to submit a daily health screening through ParentSquare before entering campus. For the safety of our Claremont community, please keep your student home if they have any COVID-like symptoms, even if your student is fully vaccinated. We will follow the OUSD health and safety protocol when any person exhibiting COVID like-symptoms while on campus. Contact Mrs. Anderson if you need any COVID-related support, or if you are facing any hardships.

Immunizations

In the first weeks after school opens, our staff will be reaching out to families regarding updated immunization records. All students are required to show proof of full vaccinations. Students in 7th and 8th grades should have 2 Varicella and at least 1 TDap Booster. Please email. our school nurse, Stephanie Lim, Stephanie.Lim@ousd.org with any questions.
